AVID Department

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a world-wide program aimed at helping the most under served students in our schools today, those academically "in the middle". In other schools, these academically capable students are often overlooked for honors and Advanced Placement classes which are the gateway to a college education.

AVID is critical at Harding Charter Prep because we require all students to take AP classes. AVID fills the gap those students who have dedicated themselves to our rigorous curriculum but lack the necessary study skills and experience. We use AVID techniques for all of our students in advisory classes as well as core classes. In addition, a dedicated AVID elective class provides help for those students selected using a rubric that is designed according to the national standards. Students that are selected as AVID students are not behavior problems in the classroom, have good attendance, often are the first in their family to graduate from high school and even more often, are the first in their family to have dreams to attend college.  In addition, about 1/2 of our students are on the free/reduced lunch program which mirrors HCP demographics.

The Mission of AVID: The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle, have the skills necessary to be successful in high school as well as college. These students will succeed in a rigorous curriculum, complete a rigorous college preparatory path,  enter mainstream activities of the school,  increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.
